Marc, a partner at the firm, is widely recognized for his comprehensive technical expertise across all facets of patent law, with a particular emphasis on complex, high-stakes patent litigation. Throughout his career, Marc has represented many of the world’s leading technology companies, successfully guiding clients through a vast array of cross-border disputes within Europe and beyond. His litigation portfolio spans telecommunications, consumer electronics, automotive engineering, medical devices, chemical products, and pharmaceuticals, reflecting both the breadth and depth of his practice.
Marc’s litigation credentials are distinguished by his involvement in landmark matters concerning products ranging from laser toner cartridges and prosthetic heart valves to tele-health medical solutions, lorry brakes, smartphones, graphical user interfaces, LED lighting, and chemical compounds. Notably, for over a decade, he has played a pivotal role in litigation concerning laser toner cartridges and printer consumables, particularly with respect to the exhaustion of patent rights.
Over the past couple of years, Marc has developed significant experience in pan-European litigation under the Unified Patent Court (UPC) regime. He has served as lead counsel in numerous high-profile UPC enforcement campaigns, prevailing before various UPC divisions of the UPC, including securing victories at the Court of Appeal in cases of seminal importance. He has been directly involved in nearly every variety of UPC proceedings, ranging from applications for provisional measures, enforcement and penalty proceedings, to complex revocation actions and multifaceted infringement proceedings, often coordinating parallel actions across multiple jurisdictions including German national actions.
Beyond patent infringement, Marc has amassed particular expertise in FRAND licensing and standard-essential patent (SEP) disputes, including their significant competition law dimensions. He has also gained deep knowledge of the enforcement of software patents, having successfully established new jurisprudence concerning the territorial reach of software-related claims, recently achieving a landmark decision on behalf of a plaintiff in this fast-evolving area.
Marc possesses a broad transatlantic perspective, regularly collaborating with colleagues across Europe and the United States to ensure seamless and unified litigation strategies. Prior to joining Peterreins Schley in September 2022, Marc was a partner at the international law firm Bird & Bird in Munich.
Marc holds law degrees from the University of Münster, including a Ph.D. in international law and an LL.M. in intellectual property law. He is also certified as a specialist IP attorney (“Fachanwalt für Gewerblichen Rechtsschutz”), underscoring his depth of technical and legal proficiency.
A thought leader in his field, Marc is a frequent lecturer on patent law issues and has been invited to speak before various intellectual property organizations (including GRUR and VPP). Marc’s expertise, especially in the electronics and mechanics sectors, was recognized by The Legal 500 in 2022, where he was touted as an expert for electronics and mechanics. JUVE PATENTS recognized Marc in its 2025 UPC firm rankings as an "outstanding and entrepreneurial thinker," and in its 2026 UPC firm rankings as "excellent in telecoms”.
Marc has lectured on patent law at various conferences and upon invitation of IP associations (GRUR, VPP etc.), and has been invited to speak on panels with, among others, the presiding judge of the German Federal Court of Justice and the presiding judge of the Düsseldorf Court of Appeal.
Marc has been touted as an expert for electronics and mechanics by “The Legal 500” in 2022.
